Bill Wallace, at Bill Wallace Online, recently asked the question: What other types of organizations could benifit from blogging besides for just your typical blogger (Where Do you Stop?)? After reading his blog about how banks could benefit from starting a blog, the first thing that popped into my head was that blogging could definitely benefit Not-For-Profit organizations. Bill agreed with the comment I left on his blog and wrote a great post providing an argument for NFP’s to have a blog added to their website.
- Public Knowledge: There are many people that are skeptics out there that question if their tax money is being put to good use that they give towards schooling. Schools writing publicly about where the money is going, whether it’s towards salaries, equipment, or straight to the children can only improve their image.
- Increased Visibility: Anything that the school does that can increase it’s reputation (good test scores, winning in sports, charitable acts) would be recorded and be able to be accessed at any time in the future. Too many times on static websites, the information is put up temporarily then taken down, and the act that could increase the school’s reputation would be forgotten.
- Checks and Balances: Since I believe all the money that is spent within public school systems is public knowledge, financial information could be posted to the website which would discourage acts by individuals or groups to exploit the system. All too often we hear on the news about how money was stolen from or misused within a school system, making this information more public could help the process.
- Increased Community Pride: People are always looking for things to relate to and be proud about. Whether you’re an alumni or just a member in the community, posting good deeds and accomplishments on the blog can only increase the pride you have in your school.
These are just a few of the ways I believe school systems can benefit from adding a blog to their website. I’m sure there there are are several good reasons the I left off the list so feel from to leave a comment and leave your opinion either way on the topic.

Not a bad idea at all John. It’d be an interesting experiment for someone to try out, that’s for sure.
